October Hack Day @ Startup Edmonton
Limited Capacity seats available

Join Startup Edmonton for monthly Hack Days - time dedicated to building, learning and tinkering in a collaborative setting. Whether you are ready to build a new feature, want to improve your coding skills, or explore design thinking, Hack Days are a great way to get in the habit of building. Plus, it’s a chance to meet more members of the startup community, outside of head-down & focus work-time, and we provide loads of coffee & lunch.

Also, this month some community leaders are running a tech t-shirt and sticker exchange! Bring new or lightly worn t-shirts with tech logos to donate to other geeks, or come pick out some t-shirts and stickers from the stash. Any shirts remaining at the end-of-the-day will be donated. Drop by anytime and stay as long as you like!

Requirements: Idea or project to work on (even a class assignment), software or hardware focused, all skill levels welcome.

Equipment Available: littleBits, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Bluetooth beacon, RFID kit, and Leap Motion. (Ask the Startup Edmonton Team if you would like to access any of these resources.)

Schedule:
  • 9:00am: Doors Open – grab a coffee and get settled in to work!
  • 9:00am: (Optional) Business Model 101 workshop - registration required
  • 12:00pm: Lunch Break
  • 1:00pm: Continue working on projects or attend a workshop
  • 1:00-4:00pm: (Optional) Join Free Code Camp in the kitchen – anyone interested in learning how to code is welcome, regardless of experience level!
  • 5:00pm: wrap up, high fives

Still wondering if Hack Day is for you? Our advice is to come down and give it a try! For expert and intermediate level participants, it’s an opportunity to get feedback on your work and spend time on passion products. For beginners, it’s a great way to dedicate time to learn a new skill.

Are minors welcome? Hack Day is suitable for high school & post-secondary students. Younger children & teens are encouraged to check out programming at the Edmonton Public Maker Spaces. Email hello@startupedmonton.com with any questions or requests.

Are you ready to jump into coding?!

Anyone interested in learning how to code is welcome, regardless of your current level of knowledge or lack thereof.

This month we are meeting up @ Startup Edmonton to take part in their Monthly Hackday!
We will have space for you to work. Feel free to come and hang out with us, meet other developers, and social network with the Edmonton tech community.

Your level of knowledge at programming doesn't matter at all, nor does your advancement stage in the Free Code Camp curriculum, just come and meet us! We're all learning!

You will get a lot out of these sessions (sense of community, belonging, new perspectives, insights and knowledge, etc.)!

All you need is curiosity and interest in coding. No one here will judge-> we all had to start at one point or another.

Besides, we are very friendly. Promise!

Some of us have actually discussed how this meeting has made us feel more committed to the learning process than if we were paying for the courses. Friendship and camaraderie have proven to be the best motivator to stick to your learning.

Sign up to https://www.freecodecamp.org/ and start working through the program.

• What to bring
Laptop, free CodeCamp Account/other project, Power supply, and a smile ;)

Painless Public Presenting Workshop with Alyson Connolly
Limited Capacity seats available

Public Speaking ranks as one of the highest anxiety producing experiences that most people will face. But it is also one of the keys to success for many people in business. You may be an expert in your field, but if you can’t communicate that expertise to others, it will remain your secret.

When you make presentations to clients, describe the future of your company to your employees, or even speak to colleagues around the water cooler, your public speaking skills can be the difference between success and failure. Your delivery and overcoming the anxiety of public speaking is the key to reaching your potential.

I treat public speaking as a performance. Just as an athlete gets keyed up when he/she is ready to perform, you must have a certain amount of energy when you get up in front of people to make your presentation. The goal is to control that energy through preparation, breathing techniques and understanding the psychology of the speaker/audience relationship.

In this workshop you will learn:

  •   How the connection between body, breath and mind is vital for your speaking success
  •   Body language gives you confidence as a leader in your field
  •   How anxiety creates a physiological reaction in our bodies
  •   How it affects our ability to communicate
  •   Exercises and techniques that help you gain confidence

About Alyson Connolly:

I started out as a child actor, in the first musical that CTV ever produced: The Magic Trumpet. I pursued a BFA in Acting at the University of Alberta. I spent ten years as a professional actor, and began teaching during this time. In 2012, I returned to school in the Masters in Theatre Voice Pedagogy program at the University of Alberta.

My master’s thesis was on Performance Anxiety in Public Presenters. For two years I was immersed in courses as varied as Speech Science to research papers on the plasticity of the brain and the breath techniques of professional actors. It gave me a more complete understanding of the things that influence our voice, speech and presentation.

Whether a mid-level manager speaking to their team, a lawyer speaking to a jury, or a professor speaking to a lecture theatre, I want to bring joy to public speaking and help people like you find your voice so you can succeed on your own terms, just as I have.

Marketing Matters- Social Media for your Business with Simplified Social @ NAIT
Limited Capacity seats available

Alex Carnio is the Owner and Lead Consultant of Simplified Social. She started Simplified Social off the side of her desk in 2015 when she was working in a job that focused her attention to entrepreneurs by providing them with the tools they needed to be successful in business. Working with entrepreneurs every day was very contagious and it sparked something in her that she didn't know she had, the desire to be an entrepreneur.

Alex has trained over 1500 entrepreneurs on everything from business planning to marketing to full-on social media. In this time she has realized that social media is still a struggle for so many business owners, but not for lack of trying! The problem is that as a business owner, you have other things to worry about.
This session will be hosted in CAT 309D

This month we explore analytics in the startup world, and this month's speakers are:
Kirby Banman, Data Engineer @ Jobber (getjobber.com)

Before building a plane, engineers spend a considerable amount of time testing the aerodynamics of its design. This validation process allows them to understand how external forces will act (and hopefully) lift the aircraft.

The process and mindset is the same for savvy entrepreneurs.

Before you even build your product or service, you can (and should) test your ideas through a variety of methods. Here to share some of those methods with you is TEC Executive in Residence, Kurian Tharakan.

Join us on October 18 in the heart of Downtown Edmonton to:
  1. Learn how to leverage free and paid internet tools to secure market validation such as
  • Google Search
  • Google Keyword Planner
  • Amazon
  • Moz
  • Buzz Sumo
  • Surveys and Intercepts
  1. Learn quick analysis techniques to determine how your competition is positioning itself
  2. Build a product ecosystem model to determine your product’s place and fit
  3. Learn from case studies of successful product launches

The Nuts and Bolts of Data Science for Startups
Limited Capacity seats available

Data science is a big buzzword right now. But beyond the hype, what does it really mean, and how does it relate to Canadian entrepreneurs and businesses?

As the modern digital economy continues to evolve, businesses that embrace and harness data science concepts and tools — including machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data analytics — will have a strong competitive advantage.

In this session, you will be introduced to the concepts of data science as they apply to modern business. Experts from Cybera, Alberta’s not-for-profit technology agency, will show you how data science and analytical thinking can be incorporated into business planning. You will leave with a better idea of how your company can approach “data science” in a practical, manageable way, using case studies and real-life examples.

Presented by Cybera:
Cybera is a not-for-profit technology-neutral organization responsible for driving Alberta’s economic growth through the use of digital technology. Its core role is to oversee the development and operations of Alberta’s cyberinfrastructure — the advanced system of networks and computers that keeps government, educational institutions, not-for-profits, business incubators and entrepreneurs at the forefront of technological change.

By employing a scrappy “cockroach” approach, Bartesian was able to prototype, develop, secure large orders, and close sizable investments and licensing deals with large industry partners.  Everyone has heard of the “Lean Startup” – but not the story of how it was applied in this way.  Come spend your lunch hour with us and learn how to implement some of the same methods.

Presented by: Bryan Fedorak, Co-founder, Bartesian
As Co-founder of Bartesian (think Keurig for alcoholic beverages), Bryan has led the company from ideation and prototyping all the way to mass manufacturing.  An entrepreneur first, Bryan comes from a broad background of expertise as a Mechanical Engineer and MBA.  He likes to wear many hats.  Having at one point or another ran every area of the business, Bryan has full perspective on both technical and business challenges, and sees the big picture strategically.  He has strong operational and leadership experience, having honed his skills in more than six different industries.

Ladies Learning Code: Data Insights with Python for Beginners
Limited Capacity seats available

Details
• Important to know
Registration must be made at Eventbrite in order to attend. You can register here.

• What we'll do
Python is a great language for beginners. It’s beautiful and clean-looking syntax means you'll spend less time being confused (it looks sort of like English!), and more time understanding and applying the fundamentals of programming. Python has a wide variety of uses from creating web applications to hardware programming to data analysis and scientific computing.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamental concepts of programming and how you can use this powerful tool to analyze data. You will learn how to read data from a file and extract useful insights for marketing and data analysis.

By the end of the workshop, you'll know the answers to the following:

- What is programming?
- What is Python used for?
- How do I write and run a python program?
- How can I read & analyze data in a file?

You'll be introduced to important concepts such as variables, types, conditionals and loops, and learn how to use an IDE to write more code even faster. (Not sure what any of that means? This workshop is perfect for you!)

Our Ladies Learning Code workshops offer female-identified and male-identified, trans, and non-binary adults hands-on, project-based learning experiences that are designed to give beginners the skills and confidence they need to become digital creators.

• What to bring
Laptop, powercord, download the required software and material that is emailed to you after registering your ticket through Eventbrite.
